How to buy art? Recently I was chatting with a collector of my work who wanted to learn more about buying art direct from the artist & how to buy original art online.

It was one of those how-to/ where to buy art chats as well as how to learn about the artist who makes the work. He has been buying art for a long time but was interested in trying something new, moving away from the gallery model and buying directly from the artist to expand his collection. He felt this would make his art collection more personal by learning more about the artist, like getting the back story! He didn’t know how to go about doing this and if you have found yourself thinking on a similar line here are a few tips I gave him.

The Online Art Market

The online market, as we all know, has blown up as a result of Covid-19. This also means that a lot more artists have moved to online platforms to share and sell their artwork online. Instagram is a particularly good place to research your artists. I recommend narrowing down what type of work, location and other factors that matter to you so for example #abstractartist #abstractartistuk #femaleabstractartist.

#ArtistSupportPledge

In addition to this,  #artistsupportpledge is an amazing resource for buying really good art at a discounted rate. If you are not aware of this movement it’s a simple concept that is happening internationally to support the creative industry during Covid-19. Artists commit to selling work at a reduced rate of £200 (plus p&p). Once they reach sales of £1,000 they pledge to buy another artist’s work thus creating a support network. It’s a valuable way to support the arts during the pandemic. Currently, I’m offering my prints for the #artistsupportpledge Find them here

Artist Open Studio’s

Open studios is a wonderful way to meet creatives. These generally happen at different times throughout the year depending on the studio. Artists open up their studios to the public over a couple of days giving people the chance to see their latest collections, where and how they were made whilst getting to chat directly with the artist.

As an artist, I love doing open studios as it gives me a chance to build a relationship with people interested in my work. Many people will follow my work throughout the year via my Instagram  @aisling_drennan_art and then come to buy direct from me as they have a good idea of what paintings they want. Of Course, Covid has put a pause on open studios (hoping they will go ahead next October at my studio!) here’s a look at the last open studio weekend in 2019, Delta House Studios where my studio is.

Say Hello!

Finally, it’s always a good idea to get in touch with the artist to see if they are available for a studio visit or just to chat about their work via email, facetime or DM. I really enjoy it when people do this because I genuinely like to get to know people who follow my development and if they want something particular it’s easy to work it out over a chat.

Also don’t feel that there is an expectation to buy if you do contact the artist directly. I have many followers who say I’m just going to keep an eye on what you’re making or I want to wait until I have the right space in my home or I’ll wait until my birthday comes round and that’s totally fine! It’s all just about starting a conversation and seeing where it goes.
