May 2019: How to Commission an Artist for an Original Painting – A Complete Guide

Commissioning an artist for an original painting is a wonderful way to treat yourself or someone else. It’s an intimate experience where you can tailor an original painting to suit your space.

The above painting, ‘Steadied Thinking’ was my first original art commission in 2019 for an American collector. It’s always a great compliment to be chosen for a private art commission. Let me walk you through the steps of how I do this.

How do art commissions work?

If you’re thinking to commission an artist for an original painting but aren’t sure where to start, don’t worry—the process is flexible and collaborative. Every commission process is different depending on the client. Some buyers, already familiar with my work, give me free rein—often just specifying the dimensions—while others request something inspired by work from my current series.

How much is an art commission?

Art commission pricing depends on the size of the piece and the painting surface you’d like. Once we confirm the details of your commissioned painting, I request a 40% deposit to begin. Before starting, we’ll talk about the palette, process, and feel of the piece so you’re completely comfortable before the brush hits the canvas.

How long does a painting commission take?

I usually allow 4–6 weeks to complete a piece (depending on size), and I can provide photo updates throughout the creation process if requested. Please keep in mind that shipping time varies depending on your location.

Over the years, I’ve completed custom artwork for collectors in the UK, US, and Ireland. From the first conversation to seeing the finished work hanging in its new home, the commission of a painting is one I enjoy.
